Healing Spaces: Inside Our CPE Centre and Why Environment Matters in Pastoral Training

In the sacred work of pastoral care, formation is as much about where we learn as it is about what we learn.

At the Servants of the Sick Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Training Centre, we understand that the environment where learning happens shapes the quality of training, the depth of reflection, and the openness to personal and spiritual growth. That’s why our Centre, located in the serene Kilimani area of Nairobi, is more than just a training facility—it is a healing space in itself.

Let us take you behind the walls of our CPE Centre to show you why our environment matters.

1. A Sanctuary of Stillness in the Heart of Nairobi

Though only a few minutes from Nairobi’s Central Business District, our CPE Centre feels worlds away from the city’s chaos. Nestled in a quiet, leafy part of Kilimani, the atmosphere is calm, contemplative, and ideal for reflection, study, prayer, and meaningful dialogue.

For students undergoing the emotionally and spiritually intensive process of Clinical Pastoral Education, this tranquility is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity. Silence and serenity allow the soul to breathe, reflect, and engage deeply with the experiences and emotions that arise during pastoral formation.

2. Comfortable, Private Accommodation for a Focused Learning Experience

The CPE journey is immersive and demanding. To support this, we offer over 20 well-equipped, self-contained rooms that allow students to live on-site in comfort and privacy.

These rooms are designed to provide a quiet retreat after long days of clinical visits, group sessions, and personal reflection. Having a space to rest and recharge contributes significantly to mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual renewal.

3. A Dining Experience That Feeds Body and Fellowship

Pastoral training is also about community—and there’s no better way to foster community than around the table. Our modern dining facility serves both local and international cuisine, offering students the nourishment they need for their bodies while encouraging conversation and connection.

Meals at the CPE Centre are more than just food; they are opportunities to share stories, reflect on the day, and build relationships that often last far beyond the 10-week program.

4. State-of-the-Art Learning and Reflection Spaces

The heart of CPE is group process, theological reflection, and supervisory learning. Our Centre features two spacious multi-functional conference rooms filled with natural daylight and peaceful ambiance, perfect for:

  • Group discussions

  • Case study presentations

  • Interactive seminars

  • Spiritual and emotional processing

These rooms become sacred spaces of growth—where students confront their assumptions, explore their emotions, and receive guidance that stretches both mind and spirit.

5. Counseling Rooms That Hold Space for Transformation

CPE is about care, and that care begins with the student. Our private counseling rooms are designed to create a safe, confidential, and welcoming environment for both simulated and real sessions.

These rooms are essential for students as they learn to listen without judgment, offer presence without fixing, and speak truth in love. They’re also where students process their personal challenges under supervision, ensuring emotional maturity and pastoral resilience.

6. Forming the Whole Person in a Holistic Setting

From the layout of our facility to the rhythm of our day, every detail is designed to support the holistic formation of pastoral caregivers.

Whether it’s journaling in the garden, sharing a laugh with peers, or sitting in silence before a case review, students are constantly invited to bring their whole selves—body, mind, and spirit—into the learning process.

The physical space here fosters openness, attentiveness, and empathy—qualities essential for anyone serving in hospital chaplaincy, parish ministry, crisis intervention, or community care.

Why Environment Matters in Pastoral Training

In many ways, our students become the kind of caregivers they experience during their formation. When they are cared for, respected, and nurtured in a space designed for growth, they are better equipped to offer that same care to others.

A healing space produces healing people.
