Answering the Call to Care: Who Should Consider CPE Training?
In today’s fast-changing and often fragmented world, the need for compassionate, competent, and spiritually grounded care has never been greater. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) offers a unique path of formation for those called to stand beside the sick, the grieving, the vulnerable, and those in search of hope and meaning.
At Servants of the Sick CPE Training Centre, we believe that pastoral care is not limited to clergy—it is a vocation that can be embraced by a wide spectrum of individuals, each bringing unique gifts to the ministry of presence, empathy, and healing.
So, who should consider enrolling in CPE training? Let’s explore.
1. Clergy and Seminarians: Deepening Pastoral Skills
Whether you’re a pastor, priest, seminarian, or religious leader, CPE provides an invaluable opportunity to enrich your ministry. Many theological institutions across the globe now recommend or even require CPE as part of formal ministerial training.
Through CPE, ministers sharpen their emotional intelligence, develop skills for crisis intervention, and gain confidence in navigating complex hospital, hospice, and community settings. CPE helps answer the question: How do I care for others when words fail, or when faith is challenged?
2. Healthcare Workers with a Heart for Holistic Healing
Doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare providers often find themselves face-to-face with human suffering. CPE equips them to integrate spiritual and emotional sensitivity into their clinical practice, enhancing the overall well-being of patients and families.
If you believe that healing is more than just physical recovery, CPE may be the next step in your journey.
3. Lay People and Volunteers with a Desire to Serve
You don’t need a pulpit to make a difference.
Many dedicated laypeople, hospital visitors, church volunteers, and caregivers feel a strong pull to walk with others during illness, grief, or trauma. CPE helps transform that instinct into a structured, supervised ministry rooted in deep listening, compassion, and self-awareness.
If you have completed theological or counseling training—or have significant experience in ministry—you may be eligible to begin your CPE journey.
4. Counselors, Psychospiritual Practitioners, and Mental Health Advocates
CPE encourages a unique blend of psychology, spirituality, and human connection. For counselors and therapists, CPE offers fresh tools to understand the spiritual dimensions of human pain, helping you guide clients toward meaning, integration, and healing—especially within a culturally grounded African context.
5. Individuals Seeking Personal Growth and Discernment
CPE isn’t only for professionals. It’s also for those on a personal journey of healing, growth, or vocational discernment. Many who go through CPE find that the process helps them explore their values, understand their emotional patterns, and deepen their spiritual life.
If you’re at a crossroad, wrestling with your calling, or seeking clarity in your life’s purpose—CPE can provide the space, support, and structure to help you find answers.
6. Those Pursuing Chaplaincy or Pastoral Counseling Certification
For individuals pursuing certification as hospital chaplains, military chaplains, hospice caregivers, or pastoral counselors, completing one or more CPE units is often a mandatory requirement.
At Servants of the Sick, we provide an accredited path through OPCEA, where students can earn up to four CPE units toward certification and specialization in their chosen field of pastoral ministry.
